Marginal Well Communities

Marginal Well
Impacted Communities

If you’re here, there’s a good chance you’ve heard that there are low-producing oil and gas wells near a school in your community, and you want to know what you can do about it. You’re in the right place.

Below you’ll find a list of Colorado communities where we’ve identified low-producing wells within 2,000 feet of a school. Each entry shows the schools affected and the number of wells nearby. These aren’t hypothetical risks: they’re aging, poorly maintained wells that can leak methane and toxic chemicals, and in many cases they’ve been sitting idle for years with no plan to get them properly plugged and abandoned. At worst, bad operators have been causing havoc in Colorado communities.

The most effective thing you can do is make this issue visible in your community. Bring it up at your next PTA meeting or school board session. Raise it with your city council representatives. Share this page with neighbors who live near one of these wells. And if you’re ready to do more,  join us for a phone bank, help us reach out to operators directly, or work with us to organize in your community.

A low producing KPK well sits across the street from Thunder Valley K-8 in Frederick.

We Need Your Support

This work takes time, expertise, and resources. If you believe every child deserves to go to school without an aging oil well next door, please consider making a donation to support our research, community outreach, and advocacy efforts.
